What is the pankration?

The pankration is an "all in" wrestling sport that originated in Ancient Greece. It was introduced into the Greek Olympic Games in 648 BC and thought as a mix of boxing and wrestling. The word pankration means "all powers".

Greek mythology states that the two heroes Heracles and Theseus invented pankration as a result of their confrontations. Pankration wasn't only used in athletic competitions, it was also practised in war.

The aim of the sport is to use a variety of techniques in order to strike their opponent as well as take them to the ground. When the pankratiasts fight standing up, pankration would be called ano pankration and when they would take to the ground, this is called kato pankration.

Some moves include:
Striking with the legs
Straight kick to the stomach
Counter (holds attempted leg kick and unbalances opponent).
Single shoulder lock
Single arm bar (elbow lock)
Arm bar- shoulder lock combination
Tracheal grip choke
Tracheal dig using the thumb
Choke from behind with the forearm
Heave from a reverse waist lock
Heave from a waist lock following a sprawl
Heave from a waist lock from behind

Up to today pankration has not been recognised as an Olympic Sport. In the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, pankration was attempted to gain part as a 'demonstrative sport'. But attempts failed and pankration didn't take part in the 2004 Olympic Games.

Pankration has taken as extraordinary revival during the mid-1990's.
